Better Target Acquisition

While practice certainly does make perfect, practice always pays bigger dividends if it’s done correctly. One of the "secrets" of smooth and accurate shooting — while moving or on multiple targets — is a deceptively simple one.

Pick out two spots on a wall a few feet apart and — with your "unloaded" finger — first point at one and then, as quickly as possible (fig. A), move your finger and point at the second spot. You’ll find your finger probably went slightly past the spot and you had to then move it quickly back onto the "target." Now for the secret.

Try it again, only this time, when you move your finger from one spot to he other, look at the second spot first (fig. B), lock your eyes onto the "target" and then move your finger. You’ll find the spot virtually instantly with little or no "run past" with your finger. As you practice, you’ll soon be moving your eyes, locking on the next target and moving the sights almost simultaneously. You’ll notice your hit percentages increase dramatically and speed will come with practice.
